* Israel keen to assist Sri Lanka in modernization of agriculture, education

Feb 12 (CP) Colombo- Israel has expressed readiness to provide its advanced technical capabilities to enhance bilateral relations with Sri Lanka, particularly in the areas of the economy.

Ron Malka, Israeli Ambassador to Sri Lanka Resident in New Delhi has pledged to support with modern technology for education, vocational training, transportation, and especially for modern agriculture considered vital for improving yield when he called on President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Wednesday at the Presidential Secretariat.

The Ambassador said the purpose of his visit was to explore new areas of cooperation between the two countries.

Recalling his visits to Israel during his tenure as Defense Secretary, the President said that Israel has the capability to support the development of selected sectors in the Sri Lankan economy.

“Agriculture is very important to us in terms of its contribution to the national economy and the number of people employed. Much of it depends on traditional methods. Farmers do not get enough income. They suffer from chronic poverty. Therefore, young people are reluctant to choose agriculture as a career. Therefore, modernization of agriculture is essential to generate sufficient income and attract the youth,” President Rajapaksa said.

Responding positively to the President Rajapaksa’s request, the Israeli ambassador said his country has the ability to add value to existing agricultural activities by introducing modern methods of farming.

The Ambassador also pointed out that it is also possible for Israel to assist Sri Lanka in the modernization of the fields of education and vocational training.

Secretary to the President Dr. PB Jayasundera and the First Secretary of the Israeli Embassy Mrs. Noa Hakim were also present at the meeting.
