Feb 09 (IT) Indian Fisherman Jaiselan was arrested by the Sri Lankan navy on January 15, 2018 along with three others from Mandapam Sea shore.
In a tragic incident yesterday, Jaiselan's son Stephan, 28, died suddenly. It is alleged that Stephan had died due to grief that his mother was ailing from terminal illness, and that his father was in the Sri Lankan custody.
The extended family of Stephan had requested that Jaiselan be released for conducting the last rites of his son, and they had further insisted that the body will not be cremated without Jaiselan.
Based on this request from the family, a request was faxed to Indian Embassy in Sri Lanka from the Mandapam Fisheries Department with document of the death certificate of Stephan's attached.
Following this the attorney general of Colombo has granted release to the four fishermen, who are now being moved to India in an emergency basis.
The fishermen are expected to reach India by tonight.
"This is a tragic incident. My brother was a very nice persona and he was very affectionate to my father. My father's sudden arrest in Sri Lanka had shattered him, and this has caused his sudden death. Without my father seeing Stephan's body we won't conduct the funeral," said Stella, Stephan's sister.
"My uncle had gone to the sea only for fishing and not for smuggling anything. Why are fishermen not allowed to do their livelihood? Why isn't the Indian government taking any action against this injustice?" asked Rani, Stephan's cousin.
