Sept 08 (Hindu) Voting opened on Saturday in a Sri Lankan provincial election where a Tamil party regarded as former proxies of separatist rebels in Sri Lanka is contesting.
The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) is vying for seats in the Eastern province for the first time since the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were defeated militarily in 2009.
The alliance acted under the directions of the Tamil rebels during the war.
Tamil parties boycotted the last provincial election in 2008.
More than 1 million voters were registered the Eastern province, which comprises the Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara districts and include areas previously held by Tamil rebels.
The results from all three provinces are due on Sunday.
